From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

4 mins: Switzerland 0 France 0: It's been an open, attacking start in Lille despite the realisation that a point would suit both sides. After the host nation forced a corner in the opening seconds, the Swiss have pushed on. Indeed, had Breel Embolo timed his run on to Stephan Lichtsteiner's lofted pass better, the youngser would have been one-on-one with Hugo Lloris.
17 mins: Switzerland 0 France 0: Ooof! Paul Pogba hits the crossbar again! And this time Sommer knew nothing about it. Driving forward from midfield with the Swiss defenders backing off, Pogba let fly with a swerving drive off the outside of his foot from 30 yards. The Switzerland stopper remained rooted to the spot, and was soon a very relieved man as the ball crashed off the frame of his goal, and back into play.
52 mins: Switzerland 0 France 0: "Their corners have been awful," moans BBC co-commentator Danny Murphy about the Swiss. It's a bit rich coming from someone who spent his last season at Fulham curling his corners on to the head of the first defender. Just kidding, I love you really, Danny.
54 mins: Switzerland 0 France 0: A dreadfully underhit backpass from Johan Djourou puts Andre-Pierre Gignac through with one man to beat; the striker looks to have done it too, skipping away from the last defender with ease. However, out of nowhere, appeared Valon Behrami with such a forceful tackle that the ball burst on impact with the Swiss midfielder. That's one way to keep strikers out.
