From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

It’s a big game for…

Harry Kane:

After being dropped against Slovakia, Kane is expected to regain his place for the game against tournament surprise, Iceland. On paper it looks like a good chance for Kane to play himself into form. However, Iceland will almost certainly employ the same stifling tactics that England encountered in the group stages, which left Kane looking isolated. Roy Hodgson has shown great faith in the Spurs star, but failure to deliver here will surely spell the end his starting place should England progress.

Best stat…

Aside from a 2012 friendly, England’s only other meeting with Iceland came in 1982 in a World Cup warm-up match. England could only manage a 1-1 draw, with a goal from Paul Goddard.

Player to watch…

Adam Lallana

Football can be a cruel game. Had England converted just one of their many chances against Slovakia, several players would have come out with great credit. Along with Nathaniel Clyne, Lallana falls into that category.

The Liverpool player combined craft with industry in a fine display, and was unfortunate to be hauled off. Many questioned his inclusion in the squad, let alone the team. He is now fast becoming a key part of Hodgson’s plans.

Premier League interest…

England: All 23 players in the squad are Premier League based

Iceland (1): Gylfi Sigurðsson

Past meetings…

England 6 (Lampard, Rooney x 2, Vassell x 2, Bridge) Iceland 1 (Helguson) Friendly, 2004

Their only other meeting, a 1-1 draw, was a friendly in 1982

Who will the winners face next…

The victors will play France or the Republic of Ireland in the quarter-final
