England man for man
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Spilled the first shot he faced, a low cross in the 25th minute. Good block in 77th minute. Had little else to trouble him in his 13th consecutive start 5 out of 10
Phil Neville
A no-nonsense, dependable performance at right-back from Manchester United's renascent utility man. Pushed forward, tracked back. 6
Jonathan Woodgate
Mobile, strong, and determidely dogged early on. Closed down well. Suspicion of unforced handball. Injuries could be his biggest worry for Portugal. 6
John Terry
Did nothing wrong and did nothing particulary spectacular as he tried to cement the second first-choice central defensive berth alongside Sol Campbell. 6
Jamie Carragher
Mostly sound but was culpable for the Swedish goal. Progressive down the left flank. Will rely on injuries elsewhere for a summer's work. 5
Owen Hargreaves
Versatile, thoughtful and assured performance, he roamed from right to centre, attacking at will. Beckham-esque free-kick that hit the woodwork. 7
Nicky Butt
Worked hard, ran intelligently. That had advantages when he dodged Swedes to find space, but drawbacks when his team-mates didn't notice. 6
Steven Gerrard
Started at the tip of the diamond, but dropped deeper to become more involved. Workrate and awareness good, distribution fine. 6
Alan Thompson
Lack of possession wasn't his fault. Not imposing himself more was, as when he was slow to provide back-up behind Rooney. But aided Carragher. 5
Wayne Rooney
Lively start, typically bustling, energetic and urgent. He exploited Sweden's lack of pace in central defence effectively. Was evidently hungry for a goal. 6
Darius Vassell
Two early dashes forward exemplified the danger of his pace, which Eriksson values highly, before club-mate Mellberg ended his night. 5
Jermain Defoe
Seized the initiative after coming on for Vassell in the 12th minute. First shot hit the post. Busy and dangerous thropughout, not afraid to shoot from range. 6
Anthony Gardner
Calm and measured, light on his feet, almost graceful at times. However, lapses in concentration, even if only tiny ones, as here, could cost him a place. 5
Gareth Southgate
Not at fault for the goal that settled the game, and he had little to do in game afterwards. He marshalled the defence adequately, if not spectacularly. 5
Joe Cole
Showed his best (which wasn't that great) at the last. First by jinking, shooting and ultimately missing the target, then by scuffing shot from a Parker pass. 5
Alan Smith
Maybe his deployment on the right was a chance to prove versatility. He is, but not on this evidence. 5
Emile Heskey
Made one decent run, where power was key to shug away challenges, that ended in a fruitless shot.5
Jermaine Jenas
Had a quiet evening where he had an opportunity to impose himself. He didn't take it. 5
Scott Parker
Injected a little more adventure late on in game with a couple of lively runs. 5
