England vs Republic of Ireland players ratings: Jack Grealish impresses in easy rout for Three Lions

England 3-0 Ireland: A straight-forward victory at Wembley after goals from Maguire, Sancho and Calvert-Lewin

England easily beat a poor Republic of Ireland side 3-0 at Wembley on Thursday night.

The Irish side lost John Egan to an early injury and Harry Maguire headed England into a lead soon after. Jadon Sancho doubled England’s lead with a low finish into the bottom corner from the left side of the box.

After the break it continue to be one-way traffic, with Bukayo Saka winning a penalty for England which Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted.

Ireland’s first shot of the night came well over an hour into the match, saved by debutant substitute Dean Henderson, while Jude Bellingham also made his senior England bow in the second half.

Here are the player ratings from the friendly clash.

ENGLAND

Nick Pope - 6. Had absolutely nothing to do in the first half. Didn’t face a shot and subbed at the break.

Michael Keane - 6. Ireland’s lack of ability to construct attacks meant he wasn’t really troubled, or tested, at the back.

Harry Maguire - 7. Scored the opening goal and went close with another header.

Tyrone Mings - 6. Got on the ball in the attacking third as much as in the defensive third. Happy to push forward whenever possible.

Reece James - 7. Basically a winger for most of the game. Nice link play and passes into the area. Scuffed a couple of shooting chances.

Mason Mount - 7. Didn’t have licence to get forward as much as usual while part of a double-pivot, but held his position well and his range of passing was good.

Harry Winks - 7. Broke play up, moved it on, did a tidy job.

Bukayo Saka - 6. In terms of movement, pace and attacking intent he was a ten. His passing, crossing and final shot was rather less-impressive. Won a penalty for England’s third.

Jadon Sancho - 7. Not at his very best, but still more than enough pace and quality to trouble the Ireland back line and score.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin - 7. Good movement and closing down. Didn’t see too many chances fall his way but buried a brilliant penalty.

Jack Grealish - 8. Didn’t disappoint. Lots of incisive passing, dribbling and looking to create scoring chances.

IRELAND

Darren Randolph - 5. Flapped at a cross early on and didn’t get much better thereafter. Nothing he could do about the goals but didn’t inspire confidence.

Matt Doherty - 6. Pinned back all game and unable to affect his team’s attacking play.

Shane Duffy - 5. Lost out in the aerial battle for the opening goal. Was caught flat-footed several times as England constantly sent over crosses.

John Egan - 6. Lasted just 14 minutes before having to depart due to a head injury.

Cyrus Christie - 4. Largely run ragged by a rotating cast of England wide men.

Daryl Horgan - 4. Not able to influence the play against this standard of opponent.

Jeff Hendrick - 5. Hard-working but offered very little on the ball and didn’t get a block in for Sancho’s goal.

Alan Browne - 6. One of the only players who really offered the occasional run forward for Ireland.

Conor Hourihane - 5. Couldn’t get involved in the game and spent most of it unsuccessfully tracking back England’s runners from the second line.

Callum O’Dowda - 5. Another who brought plenty of running, but little actual quality in possession.

Adam Idah - 5. Played up front alone against three top-flight centre-backs. Predictably had little impact in hold-up play and nothing at all in the area.
