Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

It’s a big game for…

Theodor Gebre Selassie – Played out of position as an attacking right midfielder against Spain, Gebre Selassie will be looking to fall back to his more natural role of right back. Not one to shy away from a challenge, he’ll be tasked with whipping balls in from the wings and quickly tracking back for the Czech Republic. While his work-rate will never be questioned, his ability to stop the likes of Darijo Srna and Ivan Perišić out wide will be.

Best stat…

This is the first time that these two nations will meet competitively. Croatian forward Nicola Kalinić scored two in an international friendly win against the Czech Republic in 2011.

Player to watch…

Luka Modriç – Modric’s goal capped off a fine performance from the midfielder. Undoubtedly Croatia’s best player, Modriç will be crucial in transitioning defence to attack for his side. With an eye for a pass and a killer through ball at his disposal, all eyes will be on the Real Madrid man.
