Club America 0 Real Madrid 2: After breaking down an initially resilient Mexican side, victory for Zinedine Zidane's side was never in doubt

Real Madrid booked their spot in the Fifa Club World Cup final against Kasima Antlers after seeing out a comfortable victory over Club America at the Nissan Stadium, Japan, on Thursday night.

Victory means Madrid have not lost in any competition since April 6, an unbeaten run which now stretches to a club record 36 games.

After an open first-half, with both sides enjoying their fair share of chances in front of goal, Karim Benzema eventually broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time to put Madrid in the driving seat as they headed into the second half.

Newly crowned Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo rounded off a far stronger performance from Real after the break with a powerful finish in the 93rd minute.

The strike looked to have been ruled out as offside by Paraguayan referee Enrique Caceres before, in consultation with the video referee, the goal was eventually given.

Ricardo La Volpe’s men had put in a defiant performance in the opening 45 minutes and despite playing against relatively one-way traffic, it was Club America who came closest in the first 20 minutes.

Silvio Romero spurned a splendid chance on the edge of the Madrid box as he curled Renato Ibarra's low-driven cut-back wide of the goal.

But Madrid quickly racked up the pressure.

Five minutes after Romero's miss, Ronaldo went on to hit the woodwork as his glancing header from Lucas Vazquez's cross found the left-hand side post. The Portuguese forward remained Real's main attacking outlet as he later dragged a low shot across the face of goal.

The European champions eventually took the lead in first-half stoppage-time when Toni Kroos' through-ball picked out Benzema in the penalty area and the France forward stabbed the ball into the top corner with the outside of his boot.

As the game proceeded throughout the second half, the Spaniards comfortably tightened their grasp with Club America fading to the fringes of the match.

Luka Modric and Toni Kroos excelled in the central positions, dictating the run of play and providing the foundations from which the majority of Madrid’s chances were created.

Vazquez equally impressed with his hard running and fast pace down the right flank. The Spaniard was a constant source of threat, with one pass on the hour mark proving particularly dangerous.

After bursting into space from the right flank, Vazquez cut another ball back to Ronaldo, but his goal-bound effort was blocked. The Portuguese was handed a second bite of the apple but his headed attempt was off target before Modric's acrobatic effort flew wide.

Club America did cling on as the final whistle approached, in fanciful hope of a late equaliser, but Ronaldo struck the final hammer blow in the dying seconds as he collected a pass from substitute James Rodriguez and promptly drilled a low shot past goalkeeper Moises Munoz.
