Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.England coach Fabio Capello believes Sir Alex Ferguson was right to play Wayne Rooney in Manchester United's Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.
Rooney was a surprise starter at Old Trafford last week after picking up an ankle injury during the closing seconds of United's first leg defeat against the German side.
The gamble did not pay off as the forward was forced off after 55 minutes after aggravating the injury, with United going on to lose the tie on away goals.
Rooney, who missed the Premier League draw at Blackburn on Sunday, will be a key figure if England are to challenge for the World Cup this summer, but Capello insists he was not concerned by Ferguson's selection of the 34-goal striker.
Capello was quoted in The Sun as saying: "I perfectly understand Sir Alex's decision to play Rooney because he knows how important he is psychologically for the whole team.
"I don't think he took an unnecessary risk.
"If he played Rooney after the pre-match tests, clearly his conditions allowed him to do so."
