Kylian Mbappe left covered in blood following brutal injury in Euro 2024 match

France overcame the potentially difficult hurdle of an in-form Austria as they got their Euro 2024 campaign up and running with a 1-0 victory courtesy of an own goal, but talisman Kylian Mbappe suffered a worrying injury.

It proved a very mixed night for France’s captain Mbappe though as he was left still searching for his first goal in a European Championship and went off bloodied late on with a suspected broken nose.

Austria, with one defeat in their last 16 matches, stood their ground and went close through Christoph Baumgartner after 37 minutes but a minute later France struck when a brilliant piece of wing play by Mbappe took him to the byline and his cross was deflected into his own net by the head of Max Wober.

Mbappe, who has never scored a European Championship goal, looked certain to break that duck after 55 minutes but shot wide when clean through and, though Marcus Thuram and Ousmane Dembele also went close, the 2022 World Cup runners-up could not find a second and had to endure a few defensive scares before clinching the win.

Austria 0-1 France

90 mins: Comical stuff here!

Mbappe has come back onto the pitch, with France not allowed to make the subs at the last break in play, and goes straight down!

And the referee is booking Mbappe for coming on without permission!

He now comes off for Olivier Giroud, while Fofana comes on for Griezmann!

Looks like it could be a broken nose for Mbappe, jeez...

Austria 0-1 France

86 mins: Austria almost get away on the break but N’Golo Kante - who has been outstanding tonight - nullifies Patrick Wimmer and gets a foot in!

At the other end, Mbappe is down and there’s a lot of blood on his face after colliding with Danso, going for the ball in the air!

A bloody nose for the France captain, who’ll need a change of shirt!

Austria 0-1 France

83 mins: Beautiful link-up play down the left between Mbappe and Camavinga, who sets up Thuram but he can only shoot straight at the keeper!

Tense finale upcoming for the French if they can’t kill the game off!

Austria 0-1 France

79 mins: Austria attacker Christoph Baumgartner and France keeper Mike Maignan collide on the floor as they clash for the ball, with both down in the box as Maignan collected.

Baumgartner has to go for the ball but receives a yellow card, as he goes forwards with his foot.

Bit hash in my opinion!
