Sheffield Wednesday and manager Carlos Carvalhal have parted company after defeat to Middlesbrough saw the fans turn on the Portuguese coach.

The defeat to Boro, which curiously also saw Garry Monk dismissed, leaves Wednesday in 15th after a poor run of form and closer to the drop zone than the play-offs after back-to-back play-off campaigns under Carvalhal’s watch.

After arriving as a relative unknown in 2015, Carvalhal took Wednesday to within 90 minutes of promotion, only to lose a play-off final to Hull City. The following year they fell one step short of that mark, losing to Huddersfield in the semi-finals.

Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri said:

“Both parties believe the time is right to go our separate ways.”

“I would like to offer my sincere thanks to Carlos for the time, effort and commitment he has given Sheffield Wednesday over the last two and a half years.

“I maintain a huge amount of respect for Carlos as a coach and as a person and he will always be welcome at Hillsborough.

“I wish him every success in the future.”

Carvalhal is expected to return to Portugal where Benfica have half an eye on him to replace the struggling Rui Vitoria.
