Round-up: Jones laments costly Cardiff errors

Cardiff City manager Dave Jones fears his team's shaky defence could prove costly to their promotion challenge after the Bluebirds lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough on Saturday and missed the chance to move within a point of leaders Queen's Park Rangers, who suffered their first loss of the season at home to Watford on Friday. "At the moment that unit isn't working," Jones said. "We're making too many basic errors at the back."

Julio Arca's penalty moved Boro out of the relegation zone for the first time in nearly a month. Manager Tony Mowbray spoke of his delight at the performance. "When you consider we've not been able to train on grass for two weeks, I think the players deserve great credit," he said. "It was a real hard shift against a good football team."

Fourth-placed Leeds were the only top-six side to win at the weekend, and are now unbeaten in their last eight games in the league.

Portsmouth beat 10-man Norwich 2-0 at Carrow Road to record their second successive away win. Dave Kitson's first goal in eight games set Pompey on their way before Canaries defender Leon Barnett was dismissed in injury-time for a foul on David Nugent in the area, conceding a late penalty which Greg Halford converted. Manager Steve Cotterill was quick to praise Kitson's performance in the win. "We're delighted for him," he said. "Everything about him was better after the goal."

Argentinian midfielder Hugo Colace's first goal of the season helped Barnsley beat Sheffield United 1-0 at Oakwell.

At Ashton Gate, Bristol City ran out 2-0 winners against Derby thanks to a Brett Pitman double. The Robins' goalkeeper David James was lucky to stay on the pitch, however, after only receiving a booking for bringing down Kris Commons in the first half.
