There was double trouble for two Premiership clubs who were dumped out of the Carling Cup second round by League Two opposition last night.

First it was Wycombe Wanderers, who produced a major upset to send Fulham tumbling out with a famous 2-1 victory at Craven Cottage.

Jermaine Easter and Tommy Mooney were on target in the first half. Mooney scored from the penalty spot after Carlos Bocanegra had brought down Easter, who produced a dynamic display.

Fulham created enough chances to win several times over but only Heidar Helguson could find the net with a header a minute after the interval.

Next it was the turn of Notts County, who humbled Middlesbrough 1-0 at the Riverside Stadium. The Congolese striker Tcham N'Toya scored the only goal after the 22-year-old had pounced on a 26th-minute error by Tony McMahon.

The defeat made for another disappointing night on Teesside for Boro's manager, Gareth Southgate, who fielded a strong side despite making wholesale changes.

Juan Pablo Angel fired Aston Villa to a 2-0 victory over Scunthorpe at Glanford Park. Angel scored the opener three minutes before half-time, following up his own penalty after Joe Murphy had saved, before powerfully heading home a second after 63 minutes.

Scunthorpe threatened throughout, particularly in the form of the young Irish striker Andy Keogh, while Billy Sharp pulled a goal back with a header late on.

Doncaster progressed with a thrilling 8-7 penalty shoot-out victory over Derby County at Belle Vue. The game went into penalties after normal and extra time had finished in a 3-3 stalemate. Derby's first seven efforts were successful but the Welsh international Lewin Nyatanga pushed his effort wide.

James O'Connor then stepped up to seal the win for Sean O'Driscoll's first home game in charge.
