From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Dean Ashton had not found the net in his 10 previous matches but rediscovered his goalscoring touch with a vengeance, hitting a hat-trick in the space of 36 minutes to sink managerless Saints.

Southampton, in the caretaker reign of Dave Bassett, went ahead after nine minutes through Djamel Belmadi. Then Ashton took over.

His first goal came from a header on the half-hour, his next two came from Youssef Safri crosses, again heading in six minutes into the second half and forcing in the ball in the 66th minute for his 10th goal of the season.

His goals will have alerted Premiership clubs with the transfer window set to open. "There is every chance that this will increase the interest in Dean," the Norwich manager, Nigel Worthington, said. "But unless there is a very substantial offer on the table he won't be going anywhere."
