From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Steve Bruce has been ousted as manager of Huddersfield after a disastrous start to the season for the first division side.

The 39-year-old former Manchester United captain paid the price after the Terriers, who narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season, slipped to second from bottom in the division.

"We have mutually agreed that it is in both the club's and Steve's best interests that this amicable agreement has been reached," chairman Barry Rubery said after talks with Bruce.

Reserve team manager Lou Macari will take over in a caretaker capacity for tomorrow night's trip to Sheffield United, the club Bruce left to join Huddersfield in June 1999.

First team coach John Deehan will act as assistant to Macari.

Bruce, who as a player helped steer Manchester United to the league and cup double, has been mentioned as a potential successor to United manager Alex Ferguson. That possibility now seems ruled out.
