Dennis Wise was yesterday sacked by Leicester City as a result of an alleged assault on his team-mate, Callum Davidson, during the club's pre-season tour of Finland.

The former Chelsea captain has had the remaining two years of his contract terminated by the Foxes for what they regard as serious misconduct. Wise had already been suspended by City after the incident in the team hotel which left Davidson with a double fracture of his cheekbone.

Leicester had taken the decision at a board meeting on Wednesday to dispense with Wise's services after listening to the recommendations of their chairman, Martin George. A club statement said: "The board have given Dennis Wise notice of termination in accordance with his contract. This decision has been taken following a proper investigation of an incident which occurred on 18 July at the club's training camp in Finland. Mr Wise... was found to have committed an act of serious misconduct."

Wise was sent home immediately by Leicester's manager, Micky Adams, and told to stay away from the club's new stadium and training ground. It was clear that George was looking to take a tough stance against Wise and Leicester have been at pains to ensure they carried out the procedure in the correct manner.

After an initial meeting between George and Adams, the club conducted an internal inquiry last Friday, which Wise attended along with his legal representative and a Professional Footballers' Association observer. After Wednesday's board meeting, Wise and his representatives were advised of the action taken against him.

Leicester are bracing themselves for the possibility of a legal fight with Wise over the pay-off due to him for the remaining 24 months of his contract.
