From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Massimo Cellino’s son has been suspended and fined by the Football Association for making offensive comments to Leeds United supporters on social media.

Edoardo Cellino, who has been a club director since his father’s takeover in April 2014, called one female supporter a “whale” and another fan a “moron”, as well as another derogatory term.

Edoardo, who posted the messages on Facebook and Instagram, will serve a three-match suspension from all football-related activity with immediate effect.

He was also fined £5,000 and warned about his future conduct after the Independent Regulatory Commission found his comments to be an “aggravated breach”, as one particular insult reference disability.

Further to the suspension and fine, Edoardo must complete an education course within the next four months.

“Edoardo Cellino has been suspended from all football and football-related activity until such time as Leeds United have completed three first team matches in approved competitions and fined £5,000 following a breach of FA Rules,” an FA statement read.

“It was alleged social comments made by the Leeds United director were abusive and/or insulting and/or improper in contravention of Rule E3(1).

“It was further alleged that this breach of Rule E3(1) was an “Aggravated Breach” as defined in Rule E3(2), as it included a reference to disability.”
