Leeds United 3 Wigan Athletic 3 (Wigan win 4-2 on penalties): Kavanagh on spot as Wigan edge out Leeds
Wigan have been showing signs of wilting from the intensity of the Premiership lately without the extra burden of knock-out games. But in addition to next Tuesday's Carling Cup semi-final second leg against Arsenal they must now plan for a fourth-round FA Cup trip to Manchester City on Saturday week after overcoming Leeds on penalties in last night's third-round replay.
Paul Jewell's side led three times - twice in normal time, once in extra time - but were pegged back on each occasion, a wonder strike from the full-back Gary Kelly four minutes from the end taking the contest to penalties. But David Healy - who had scored twice in normal time - and co-striker Rob Hulse missed the target in the shoot-out, Graham Kavanagh striking the winning kick for the Premiership side.
The Wigan manager praised his players for finding extra reserves of energy after being obliged to play the tie just 48 hours on from Sunday's Premiership defeat against West Bromwich Albion. "We wanted to have the game put back and we didn't get any help but maybe that worked in our favour in the end, creating a bit of a siege mentality," he said. "In the end I told my players to just forget about the League and enjoy themselves and it was an excellent performance."
Andreas Johansson, who will be part of the Swedish World Cup squad this summer, was on target after 24 minutes to put Wigan ahead, hitting the post with his first attempt after running on to a Jason Roberts pass, then stabbing home the rebound. Leeds were back in contention before half-time, however, Healy forcing the ball over the line after Hulse's header from a Kelly corner had been kept out by Leighton Baines and the goalkeeper John Filan.
Now Leeds appeared to be in the ascendancy, yet within 10 minutes of gaining parity they gave away the initiative for a second time, their centre-backs paying the cost of ball watching as Roberts collected a low cross from Gary Teale and Wigan's most dangerous striker had time to swivel and flick the ball up before volleying past Neil Sullivan's dive.
However, Wigan let Leeds back in again, Matt Jackson controlling the ball with a hand as he challenged Hulse for a corner, at which Graham Poll pointed instantly to the spot and Healy scored his second of the evening.
Somehow Wigan summoned the energy to go ahead for a third time in the 13th minute of extra time, Roberts meeting a cross from Kavanagh to head his second goal of the night and 11th of the season.
But with four minutes left on the clock, a Leeds corner from the left was only half cleared and Kelly let fly on the volley from 25 yards to take the tie to a shoot-out.
