This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

The perfect Championship starts achieved by Southampton and Derby County came to a grinding halt as the Saints lost a thriller at Leicester City, 3-2, Darius Vassell, Richie Wellens and a Richard Lambert own goal saw the Foxes win at home for the first time this season, while Charlie Austin scored both goals in Burnley's 2-1 defeat of the Rams at Pride Park for the Clarets' first League win of the season.

Middlesbrough stay unbeaten but they were held to a 1-1 draw at the Riverside by Coventry City, Lukas Jutkiewicz levelling for the Sky Blues after Marvin Emnes's seventh goal in seven matches had given Boro the lead.

Ipswich Town recovered from last weekend's humbling 7-1 loss at Peterborough, beating Leeds United 2-1. But Paul Jewell's men needed help – the Yorkshire side's Aidan White was sent off four minutes into the second-half when they were leading through Ross McCormack's first-half strike. After White saw red for a foul on Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Jason Scotland levelled and Keith Andrews' shot hit Adam Clayton on its way in. "We got a couple of decisions that went our way and a deflected goal," a relieved Jewell admitted. "Thank Christ for that, sometimes you have to just take the victory."

On loan from Manchester United, Robbie Brady's powerful shot from outside the penalty area saw Hull City earn their first home points of the season in a 1-0 defeat of Reading.

James Hayter's 68th-minute header earned Doncaster Rovers' first point in a 1-1 draw with visitors Bristol City. Just as well for Hayter, who had earlier seen a penalty saved by David James. And it finished 1-1 at Selhurst Park too, Glenn Murray scoring his first goal for Crystal Palace to equalise Alex Baptiste's fine 41st-minute strike for Blackpool.

Four minutes after coming on as a substitute at Fratton Park, Nwankwo Kanu equalised for Portsmouth as they earned a point in a 1-1 draw with Cardiff City, while Millwall and Barnsley drew 0-0 at The Den.

League One

Joint leaders MK Dons, Charlton Athletic and Sheffield United all won. The Dons beat Stevenage 1-0, Charlton came from behind to win 2-1 at Bury and the Blades won 1-0 at Yeovil.

League Two

Despite selling Adam Le Fondre to Reading yesterday Rotherham United beat Gillingham 3-0 to go a point clear at the top after former leaders Crawley Town lost 3-1 at Cheltenham.
