From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Stoke and Hull had to settle for a point each following a 1-1 draw at the Britannia Stadium, keeping them both in touch with the play-off places in the Championship.

The former Hull defender Leon Cort gave in-form Stoke a narrow half-time lead. Cort glanced home his fourth goal of the season in the 33rd minute from Rory Delap's delivery. However, Hull were back on level terms in the 61st minute, the veteran Dean Windass who later hit the crossbar crossing for strike partner Caleb Folan to head home from six yards.

Kevin Lisbie hit a brace on his return to Charlton as struggling Colchester beat their hosts 2-1, thus denting Alan Pardew's promotion hopes. Lisbie, who only managed to score 13 goals at The Valley in 12 years with the Addicks, added another two to that tally in the blue of Colchester with a penalty and a spectacular overhead kick to put one over on the man who released him in the summer.

The substitute Luke Varney pulled one back for Pardew's side but a Christmas period which has yielded three draws and two defeats may have all but ended their chances of automatic promotion.

Queen's Park Rangers dominated their relegation match with Leicester to move further away from the Championship drop zone with a 3-1 victory. Damion Stewart headed the Hoops in front from a corner before Adam Bolder lashed home to double the advantage at Loftus Road before the break. Dexter Blackstock scored with another header to make it three before Iain Hume fired in a free-kick to reduce the arrears but it was not enough to prevent Leicester's three-match unbeaten run from ending in convincing fashion.

In League One, Swansea's lead at the topwas cut to three points after theywere held to a controversial 1-1 draw at Swindon. Thomas Butler looked to have given the Swans all three points with a goal three minutes from full-time. But there was a late sting in the tail when Kristian O'Leary was adjudged to have fouled Simon Cox in the penalty area five minutes into stoppage time. Cox scoredfrom the spot to claim a share of the spoils.

Nottingham Forest edged past Huddersfield 2-1. Forest had Kelvin Wilson sent off for a foul in the area after 36 minutes and Phil Jevons slotted home from the penalty. But Forest bounced back with goals from Chris Cohen and Lewis McGugan.

Oldham maintained their good away form with a 3-1 win over Leeds. Reuben Hazell, Neal Trotman and an own goal from Andy Hughes put the Latics 3-0 up before the break before Leon Constantine scored a consolation.
