Chris Iwelumo guided Colchester to their eighth home Championship win on the trot last night on an embarrassing evening for Phil Parkinson on his return to Layer Road. Parkinson left Colchester in the summer to take over at Hull after taking the Us up but was crushed 5-1 by his own signing, whose side moved closer to the play-off zone.

However, Hull, who are four points from safety, took the lead in the 16th minute through Nicky Forster but Colchester took just three minutes to respond, Iwelumo heading home. Iwelumo then won and converted a penalty in the 52nd minute before setting up Jamie Cureton to smash home. Iwelumo's sealed his hat-trick in the 66th minute and the Scot completed the rout in the 79th minute, heading home a cross from the right.

Sheffield Wednesday increased the pressure on Tony Mowbray by beating his West Bromwich side 3-1 last night. Goals from Glenn Whelan and Madjid Bougherra inside the first 15 minutes sent the Baggies to their sixth defeat in nine games since Mowbray took over. Jason Koumas gave Albion a flicker of hope in the 88th minute but Wednesday hit back with a last-minute penalty from substitute Steve MacLean.
