From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Sheffield United defender Ben Doane has been ruled out of Sunday's FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal at Old Trafford after sustaining ligament damage in the 1-0 First Division defeat at Wimbledon on Tuesday.

Doane had just returned from his loan spell at Mansfield Town because of injuries to Phil Jagielka and Rob Kozluk. The 23-year-old sustained the injury in a heavy challenge with Darren Holloway, who received a yellow card. Doane will need a second scan to show whether he has fractured his shin bone.

"Ben's injury soured the evening for me," the Blades' manager, Neil Warnock, said. "I don't think the referee saw it but gave a yellow card to the Wimbledon lad out of sympathy after he saw our players' reaction."

The Wimbledon manager, Stuart Murdoch, will take action against Holloway for reacting violently. "I felt both players went wholeheartedly for the ball, but what I did see was Holloway had a little stab at the boy as he got up which I won't condone," he said. "I will deal with it internally and privately."
