Craig Conway fired Cardiff's golden generation into the record books with a perfect 10th straight home win after beating Sheffield Wednesday.

The Scottish winger's 80th-minute strike sent the Bluebirds back to the top of the Championship after a frustrating afternoon against ex-manager Dave Jones' strugglers.

Cardiff had previously won nine successive games at home in both the 1951-52 and 2000-01 seasons, but Conway's left-footed shot beyond Chris Kirkland handed Malky Mackay's side another vital maximum at the Cardiff City Stadium in their race for promotion.

Mackay said: "I'm absolutely delighted to have broken the record. Winning home games is something that does build momentum and our fans come to the ground excited every week.

"It was always going to be a tough game because there's an expectation on top teams to beat those who are down at the bottom. If you don't apply yourselves properly then you slip up. Just look at Middlesbrough against Bristol City last week.

"We were patient and that was my message to the players at half-time. Our fitness and resilience told and I'm delighted with the win and very proud of the group that they have created a little bit of history."

The late winner was also a reward for Conway's patience after the wideman saw a transfer request turned down by last month. Mackay hailed the midfielder for his performance on only his second league start of the season following Craig Noone's one-match ban.

Mackay added: "We have the same size of numbers this season but we have better quality and that means we can rely on players that can make a difference. Craig has worked hard in training and had been patient because there have been good players in front of him. Craig Noone was out, but Craig has shown that he can step in and looks like a top-end Championship player."

Meanwhile, Jones, on his first return to the Welsh capital since he was sacked 19 months ago, accused Cardiff's Malaysian owners of showing a lack of respect. The Wednesday manager has an ongoing problem, believed to be regarding a pay-off, which has not been solved.

Jones said: "My time at Cardiff is done, but I've got a problem with them that will come to light eventually.

"They need to sort it out. Basically they should be a little bit more respectful than what they have been. It will all come out in the wash sooner rather than later.

"Cardiff have got to go up because they have spent a fortune."
