Charlton Athletic have admitted that the 'sex tape' video that emerged on Thursday was a publicity stunt.

The video, which shows a couple having sex on the centre-circle at the The Valley, reached more than a million views, with speculation that a couple had broken into the ground.

However, after the club had initially claimed they were going to investigate, they admitted that the whole thing was a hoax.

"We wanted to launch our pitch hire programme with a viral that would make football fans laugh," said the club's commercial manager Mark Hassan-Ali.

"We released some 'CCTV' footage earlier in the week of a young couple on the pitch in a rather amorous situation.

"We then decided to own up and explain that it was set up by us to launch our pitch hire campaign. The feedback has been great and we can confirm that the young couple will be attending our next home match."
