This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

Championship leaders Blackburn Rovers left it late again last night but maintained their one-point advantage at the top of the table as Steve Kean's side beat Barnsley 2-1 at Ewood Park through Nuno Gomes' 85th-minute winner.

Rovers needed two injury-time goals to see off Bristol City on Saturday and their win incensed the Barnsley manager, Keith Hill, who claimed his side were better and called it "a modern-day footballing tragedy."

Blackpool are in second after beating Middlesbrough 4-1 at Bloomfield Road, Nathan Delfouneso, on loan from Aston Villa, scoring twice for Ian Holloway's side.

In the battle of the former Chelsea team-mates, Gus Poyet edged out Gianfranco Zola as high-flying Brighton won 1-0 at Watford, Craig Mackail-Smith getting the winner from the penalty spot just after half-time. Poyet said: "We really battled to get a result. Credit to the players." Despite their third defeat in a row, Zola saw some positives for Watford. "We are fighting against the odds," he said, "but we are going to make a good team out of this team, I promise."

Meanwhile, in Scotland Rangers' stuttering start to the season hit a new low as they were knocked out of the Ramsdens Cup by Queen of the South on penalties at Ibrox. Gavin Reilly's last-minute goal made it 2-2 and took the tie to extra-time after both sides were reduced to 10 men and the Dumfries side prevailed 4-3 on penalties to seal a famous victory.
