The Bluebirds repelled all offers in the January transfer window for Cameron Jerome, their coveted 19-year-old striker, and he proved his value by scoring his 17th goal of the season after 22 minutes to keep alive Cardiff's hopes of reaching the play-offs. Hull dominated in the second half but Cardiff keeper Keith Alexander made several key saves. "We must keep gathering the points to make it tough for clubs above us," the Bluebirds manager, Dave Jones, said.

Vincent Pericard scored a hat-trick, the first goals of his loan spell from Portsmouth, as Tony Pulis's side consolidated in mid-table and the Sky Blues' poor away form continued - only two wins away all season. "Vincent took his goals well, and everything fell right for him," Pulis said, "but I thought there were terrific efforts all over the pitch." Coventry manager Micky Adams blamed a weakened defence: "No complaints about the result. We had a soft underbelly today."

Jonatan Johansson, on loan from Charlton, and Darren Huckerby scored the goals as the Canaries moved into the top half of the table, leaving the Rams still only six points clear of relegation. Booed on Tuesday night despite beating Brighton, Canaries boss Nigel Worthington enjoyed a warmer reception. "We are nine points behind Preston so there is a lot of work to be done," he said, "but there are still 33 points to play for so we are certainly in with a chance [of the play-offs]."

A Kenny Miller penalty midway through the second half after substitute Jérémie Aliadière, on loan from Arsenal, was brought down by Castro Sito, lifted Glenn Hoddle's side to within five points of the play-offs. "We're coming to the business stage of the season and if we can go up to Hull [next Saturday] and do something by getting a third victory, that will go a long way to restoring some belief here," Hoddle said. But Ipswich's hopes were left looking less bright.
