Championship: Three positive coronavirus results from latest round of testing

Three individuals from two clubs are self-isolating after testing positive over the course of the last week, with the Championship getting back underway amid strict coronavirus safety protocols

The latest round of Championship coronavirus testing produced just three positive results after the season resumed last weekend.

All three individuals, spread across two unnamed clubs, will self-isolate for the next seven days before being retested, with the number fewer than half of the previous week’s tally of eight.

An EFL statement confirmed: “The EFL can confirm that 2,858 players and Club staff from the 24 Championship Clubs were tested over the course of the past week with three individuals testing positive from two Clubs.

“Those players or Club staff who have tested positive will now self-isolate in line with the guidelines provided by the EFL and only those who have tested negative will be permitted to enter training ground facilities.”

The results from the eighth round of testing takes the total number to 43 positive results out of a total 11,638 tests, with the EFL completing the highest number of tests within a single week since the programme began at the end of May.

League Two has also resumed since the last round of testing, with no positive test results recorded from 271 players and staff across the four play-off clubs. Northampton Town managed to overturn a 2-0 deficit to reach the final thanks to Monday’s 3-0 victory over Cheltenham Town, with the Cobblers set to meet Exeter City in the final next Monday after they also came from behind to defeat Colchester United.

There were also no positive test results among the four League One clubs who are set to feature in the battle for Championship promotion, with 297 players and staff tested.
