Your support makes all the difference.League One side Carlisle United have handed a two week trial to former England Under-18 captain Courtney Meppen-Walter, a matter of days after the ex-Manchester City player was released from prison.
The defender served half of the 16 month sentence he received in February for causing death by careless driving, and is now looking to earn a contract in Cumbria. Meppen-Walter will be hoping to resurrect a once-promising career that saw him represent his country 17 times at youth level. Captain of his country, and at one of the biggest sides in the country, Meppen-Walter’s career looked to have ended before it started when he was jailed last year for his role in a fatal 2012 car accident.
Nineteen year old Meppen-Walter was found to be travelling at almost twice the 30mph speed limit when his car collided with another vehicle in central Manchester, a collision which left brother and sister Kulwant Singh and Ravel Kaur dead.
He was released by Manchester City in August, and Carlisle manager Graham Kavanagh will now be hoping that he can shore up the Cumbrian side’s leaky defence. No team outside of League One’s relegation zone have conceded more goals than Carlisle, who currently sit in 16th place and have conceded 27 goals in their 15 games. Former Premier League defender Pascal Chimbonda recently joined the club on a short term deal, but Kavanagh is still looking for reinforcements as he seeks to climb away from the drop zone.
