Wigan manager Roberto Martinez was keen to take the positives from Saturday despite his side being on the wrong end of the biggest FA Cup upset of the day.

npower League Two side Swindon came from behind to beat the Latics 2-1 in their third-round tie at the County Ground, but Martinez refused to be too downbeat.

"It was pleasing to see two youngsters, Jordan Mustoe and Callum McManaman," he said.

"I thought they adapted really well and they have progressed really well in the last 18 months and that is pleasing.

"We can't expect to go into the FA Cup using just the 12 or 15 players because that can be very, very damaging.

"We want to be successful, but using the whole squad and clearly in certain areas we were a little bit slack, a little lacking in minutes."

Robins boss Paolo Di Canio called on his club's board to ensure their win was recognised.

"My lads deserve something from the club - to do something and put their names in the stadium," the Italian said.

"Normally you do this when you win something important. But I don't want a big statue - maybe just a small plaque with all their names because they did something special."

Elsewhere on Saturday, Stevenage maintained their reputation as giant-killers by beating Championship side Reading 1-0 at the Madejski Stadium, with boss Graham Westley forced after the match to address speculation he was about to leave for another post.

"There have been rumours that I was moving on all week," said Westley, whose side knocked out Newcastle at this stage last year.

"Everyone keeps asking me if this is my last game for the club. I just focus on the games. If the club comes to me and says there has been an approach I will deal with it."

Jonas Gutierrez's stoppage-time goal completed the turnaround for Newcastle as they nicked a dramatic 2-1 home triumph over Blackburn.

Rovers boss Steve Kean was disappointed not to have taken the Magpies back to Ewood Park.

He said: "We are disappointed we haven't got a replay. We played very well in the first half and I felt, on our first-half performance, we merited one."

Tottenham claimed a comfortable 3-0 win over Cheltenham at White Hart Lane with goals from Jermain Defoe, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Giovani Dos Santos.

Dos Santos looked visibly irked when Defoe dived in to tap home from close range to deny him the opener in the 24th minute.

But manager Harry Redknapp defended the England striker, saying: "Jermain's a goalscorer, he wants to score all the time. He said it was going wide."

Simon Cox scored a hat-trick as West Brom also claimed a 4-2 win, beating Cardiff, while Clint Dempsey's treble eased Fulham past Charlton 4-0.

Bolton escaped embarrassment as David Wheater's header saw them earn a replay against Macclesfield with a 2-2 draw at Moss Rose, while Heidar Helguson's 89th-minute equaliser salvaged a replay for QPR in a 1-1 draw against MK Dons.

There were no such troubles for Aston Villa, Stoke or Norwich, who cruised past Bristol Rovers, Gillingham and Burnley respectively, while Swansea came from behind to sink Barnsley 4-2 at Oakwell and Everton ground out a 2-0 win over Tamworth at Goodison Park.

Championship leaders Southampton came from behind to edge Coventry 2-1, but struggling Doncaster crashed out 2-0 at home to League One Notts County.

Blue Square Premier leaders Wrexham earned a replay against Championship side Brighton as they drew 1-1 at the Falmer Stadium.

League Two leaders Crawley Town overcame Bristol City 1-0 at the Broadfield Stadium, but there was no upset for Fleetwood as they were hammered 5-1 by Blackpool.

Elsewhere, Derby beat Crystal Palace 1-0, Middlesbrough edged Shrewsbury 1-0 and there were goalless draws in the games between Dagenham and Redbridge-Millwall, Nottingham Forest-Leicester and Birmingham-Wolves.
