From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Welcome to The Independent's live coverage of Manchester United vs Shefifeld United in the FA Cup third round.

Louis van Gaal weathered a storm over the Christmas period and still finds himself in the Old Trafford dugout in 2016 but an early cup exit at home to a League One side would surely see further questions asked about the Dutchman's reign.

United were lively, if not totally impressive, against Swansea City last weekend and ultimately picked up the three points they needed.

Nigel Adkins's Blades are four points outside of the playoffs in League One. In the world's oldest football competition, they have an excellent pedigree, reaching the semi-finals as recently as 2014, where they lost out to Hull City.

Match facts

  • Manchester United have played Sheffield United on four previous occasions in the FA Cup, with United the visitors in each fixture (W3 L1).
  • The Blades faced United in three successive seasons in the Cup between 1993 and 1995, beating their opponents in the first of these duels before bowing out in Third Round ties in each of the following campaigns.
  • Manchester United have lost once in 36 FA Cup ties against lower-ranked sides - against Leeds United at Old Trafford in the Third Round in January 2010.
  • Sheffield United have an excellent recent Cup record against higher-ranked opponents, winning five of their last six ties (L1).

Kick-off: 17.45pm
