Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has elected to rest returning striker Daniel Sturridge for the Capital One Cup match with Carlisle.

The England striker started in the win against Norwich but does not make the bench for the visit of the League Two club, with Danny Ings to start.

Adam Bogdan starts in goal, while the out of form Dejan Lovren returns in central defence after missing the draw at the weekend.

Joe Allen also returns in an almost full-strength line-up for the Reds.

LINE-UP:

Liverpool team: Bogdan, Clyne, Skrtel, Lovren, Moreno, Can, Milner, Allen, Lallana, Firmino, Ings.

Subs: Fulton, Coutinho, Gomez, Origi, Brannagan, Ibe, Rossiter.
