Carroll made his first start since January on his latest return from injury but was quiet in his 63-minute outing against a Leicester side showing 10 changes from their weekend draw at Stoke.
It was Dodoo who again stole the limelight, scoring six minutes into his first King Power Stadium appearance in the third round to follow up a hat-trick on his debut in the second round at Bury.
West Ham, who changed just three players from their win at Manchester City, fought back, however, with a Mauro Zarate goal on 27 minutes taking the tie to extra-time.
In the opening minute Leicester threatened from a right-wing cross that Dodoo chested down towards Andrej Kramaric, who could not reach it.
Leicester’s bright start continued when Leonardo Ulloa was denied by West Ham goalkeeper Adrian and the Foxes went ahead on six minutes. In a scramble to clear his lines, West Ham defender Pedro Obiang struck a clearance against the unsuspecting Kramaric and Dodoo produced a crisp, first-time finish after collecting the ricochet on the edge of the 18-yard box.
Victor Moses responded for West Ham with a 20-yard shot into the side netting before defender James Tomkins glanced a header wide from a Manuel Lanzini free-kick. Yet it was the hosts who continued to dominate and Dodoo had another good chance, only for James Collins to deflect the youngster’s effort wide.
Out of nowhere, however, West Ham levelled on 27 minutes with the aid of some good fortune. Zarate turned cleverly 20 yards from goal and his shot struck Leicester defender Marcin Wasilewski, with the deflection taking it past goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer at his near post.
Adrian made a fantastic save to keep out Leonardo Ulloa’s glancing header from King’s cross. As both side strived to avoid extra-time, King let fly from 25 yards with an effort that just cleared the crossbar.
But he would not be denied in the 116th minute, when Christian Fuchs crossed to the back post to find King in space, who headed home to prevent the match from going to penalties.
