Liverpool fans hailed the return of Jon Flanagan to the first XI as the local lad started his first match for the Reds since May 2014.

The 23-year-old, who won an England cap in the build up to the Brazil World Cup, suffered a terrible injury that left him out for the whole of last season.

Given the affectionate nickname the 'Scouse Cafu' by Liverpool fans, Flanagan looked as if he would be a fixture at right-back before injury.

Now back from that career-threatening injury, Flanagan played 40 minutes against Exeter City in the FA Cup third round replay last week, but Jurgen Klopp felt he was ready from the start against Stoke City on Tuesday night.

He quickly became a top trend on Twitter, with Liverpool fans hailing him as the only competent player in their dodgy back five.

Rival fans, however, were quick to mock his looks (we won't republish those here).

Here is some of the best reaction:

Liverpool went through to the Capital One Cup final on penalties after Simon Mignolet saved two in the shootout.
