Leeds started at a breathless pace which Arsenal could not contain, as Marcelo Bielsa’s side forced the ball from their opponents on numerous occasions, but the visitors spurned the chances which came along.
Patrick Bamford went closest for Leeds, crashing a shot against the crossbar.
Mikel Arteta clearly had words with his side at the break and they came out fighting, producing a much-improved display to take the game to Leeds, and Reiss Nelson's bundled strike proved enough to clinch the tie.
