From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Wayne Rooney is currently worth less than £20million on the transfer market, according to a study by a football think-tank.

The CIES Football Observatory uses a complex algorithm to value players across Europe's big five leagues (Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1) and published their top 100 players.

The Manchester United and England captain didn't make the top 100, a ranking that places him below seven other members of Louis van Gaal's first-team and seven of Roy Hodgson's Three Lions.

The lowest valued player in the top 100, AC Milan striker Carlos Bacca, is currently valued at 20.70m, leaving Rooney below that price.

Anthony Martial is the only player to break into the top 20, at No 11 on the list, valued at £57.10million.

The list tends to favour young players and strikers, but Rooney is ranked below Memphis Depay (£35.96m), David De Gea (£27.74m), Daley Blind (£25.76m), Chris Smalling (£24.73m), Juan Mata (£23.48m) and even Phil Jones (£22.82m), who at No 89 on the list is one place ahead of Gerard Pique.

Along with Jones, six other England players are in the top 100, with two even in the top 10 - Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling.

Everton defender John Stones, Tottenham Hotspur pair Dele Alli and Eric Dier and Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart.

The value is worked out thus:

"CIES Football Observatory transfer value calculator uses an exclusive algorithm created on the basis of nearly 1,500 fee paying transfers which have occurred during the previous five years and which originated at a big-5 league club. The new algorithm will continue to be updated after every transfer window to take into account the latest market trends."
