Vincent Kompany injury: Manchester City captain to miss rest of league season but is expected back for Euro 2016

Vincent Kompany will miss Manchester City’s final two Premier League games after being told he faces up to a month on the sidelines with the groin injury sustained in the Champions League defeat against Real Madrid.

The City captain, who lasted just six minutes of the 1-0 semi-final second-leg loss in the Spanish capital, is expected to be fit to lead Belgium in Euro 2016, however.

With City landing in Manchester shortly after 4am on Thursday morning following the defeat against Zinedine Zidane’s team, Kompany was assessed briefly by the club’s medical staff later in the day.

But it is understood that the 30-year-old, who has been plagued by muscle injuries over the past 18 months, will not play again for his club this season.

Kompany’s absence will force manager Manuel Pellegrini to retain Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi at centre-half against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday in a game which could prove pivotal for City’s hopes of securing Champions League qualification with a top four finish.

If Manchester United and / or West Ham win their respective fixtures against Norwich City and Swansea City on Saturday, City must defeat Arsenal to ensure that they remain in control of their top four destiny going into the final weekend of the season.
