Round-up: Inzaghi scores twice but Real salvage late draw at Milan
Perhaps, as Cristiano Ronaldo believes, Real Madrid are ready to rule Europe once again but they suffered their first setback of this year's competition last night in Milan. The nine-times winners, who have not finished on top of the pile since 2002, surrendered their perfect start to this year's competition but still managed to salvage a 2-2 draw, after Filippo Inzaghi had scored twice for Milan last night, and reach the last 16.
Gonzalo Higuain had earlier struck for the visitors seemingly to ensure an enjoyable return to San Siro for Jose Mourinho. But Milan, who have had an indifferent start to this year's Champions League, refused to lay down before Pedro Leon struck in injury time for the visitors. The draw leaves the Italian side in a dogfight to qualify behind Real after Auxerre's 2-1 victory over Ajax left them a single point ahead of the Dutch side.
"Overall I am not too happy with the result because we should have killed them, we had chances to kill the game," Mourinho said. "We have qualified, we didn't lose, and we keep going."
Marseilles do not have Real's history – Les Phoceens have won just one European Cup, the only French team to have done so – but they played with a swagger bordering on the Madrileno last night, thrashing MSK Zilina 7-0 to record the biggest away win in Champions League history.
A hat-trick from Mario Gomez ensured last year's runners-up, Bayern Munich, enjoyed a comfortable evening in Romania against CFR Cluj, winning 4-0 and qualifying for the last 16. Roma won the other game in Group E, beating Basle 3-2 away from home.
