David Luiz has accused his former club Chelsea of showing “disrespect” towards their captain John Terry by not giving him a new contract, on the eve of the Champions League last-16 clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

Luiz left Chelsea in 2014 after PSG made a near £50m offer that the Premier League side couldn’t turn down, although the decision would later come back to haunt them when the Brazil international went on to score the goal that eliminated Chelsea from the Champions League last season.

The two clubs meet in the European competition for a third straight year tonight, but ahead of the match Luiz has decided to wade into the row that has incensed Chelsea supporters after Terry admitted earlier in the month that he has not been offered a new contract, and would leave the club at the end of the season.

Terry will not feature in tonight’s clash at the Parc des Princes, though Luiz still had words of support for his former centre-back partner.

“John is probably Chelsea's greatest ever player, the club need to show him some more respect,” Luiz told The Mirror.

“He has been clear that he wants to stay at the club, and they are making him wait for an answer.

“That is not how you treat a player who has given you so much and been a big part of so much success. The fans love John - if this is not handled well, they are not going to be happy.

“I am confused why John hasn't been offered a new contract. He is still the best central defender at the club and one of the best in England, there should be no question about him being offered another a year.”

Luiz was part of the Chelsea side that eliminated PSG when the two sides met in the 2013/14 Champions League quarter-finals, but with PSG gaining revenge the following season, the clash sees the two clubs head into the two-leg encounter locked at 1-1 in the recent yet fierce rivalry.
