Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

It’s a big game for...

Dani Osvaldo: The disgraced former Southampton forward will be looking to show the Premier League what it has been missing for his new club. The Italian was thrown out of St. Mary’s after an alleged bust-up with club captain Jose Fonte following a £15 million move. Osvaldo has made only one start for the Portuguese club and will be itching to score his first goal against English opposition.

Weird stat…

6: Chelsea have started a Portuguese player in all six of their Champions League meetings with Porto.

Remember when...

Jose Mourinho ran the touchline at Old Trafford to celebrate Porto’s added time winner in the Champions League? Francisco Costinha’s injury time equaliser sent Mourinho’s side through en route to lifting the Champions League. The self-proclaimed Special One’s celebration has gone down in football history.

Player to watch…

All eyes will be on Chelsea striker Diego Costa as he looks set to return to the Chelsea line-up. The Spanish international caused great controversy after his fiery encounter with Arsenal’s Gabriel Paulista, and retrospective action meant his missed Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle United. Mourinho saw little wrong with his strikers’ actions at Stamford Bridge and nothing will please the Portuguese manager more than a Costa goal against his former club.

Kurt Zouma looks set to face his first major European test of the season in Portugal. The French defender has been keeping John Terry out of the Chelsea team and has struck a good understanding with Gary Cahill. The 20-year old was solid in the London sides 4-0 win over Maccabi Haifa in Matchday one.

Past three-meetings…

FC Porto 0 Chelsea 1 (Anelka), Champions League Group Stage, November 2009.

Chelsea 1 (Anelka) Porto 0, Champions League Group Stage, September 2009.

Chelsea 2 (Robben, Ballack) Porto 1 (Quaresma), Champions League Round of 16, March 2007.

Form guide…

FC Porto: DWWDWD (last six games (all comps) most recent result to the right)

Chelsea: LLWWWD

Vital information…
