Murcia the latest stop on Toshack's tour of Spain
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.John Toshack is the new coach of La Primera Liga's bottom club, Murcia. Toshack, 54, replaces Joaquin Peiro, who joined Murcia in the summer but was sacked on Monday after achieving one win in the first 20 games. "He is the best option of those that we have on the table," the Murcia president, Jesus Samper, said. "He likes the look of the new Murcia project."
Murcia will be the fourth team that Toshack has managed in Spain. He took charge of Real Sociedad in 1985 and stayed for four seasons before moving to Real Madrid, whom he led to the title in 1990.
However, a falling-out with some of Madrid's star players saw Toshack return to Real Sociedad where he remained from 1991 to 1995, when he briefly took charge at Deportivo La Coruña.
Toshack then coached Besiktas in Turkey before returning to Real Madrid for a turbulent reign which ended when he said people would "see pigs fly over the Bernabeu before he apologised" for criticising the goalkeeper Albano Bizarri.
Toshack has since coached France's St-Etienne before returning to Spain to save Real Sociedad from relegation.
