Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named an attacking line-up with Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Juan Mata and Anthony Martial all in action, and they delivered some fast football in the first half.
Greenwood opened the scoring with a finish from close range before Martial turned home at the end of a skilful dribble to reach the break two goals in front.
And soon after the restart Rashford finally got in on the act, having missed several clear chances, firing into the roof of the net in front of a jubilant Stretford End.
