Rio Ferdinand was left infuriated as Manchester United’s disastrous defending saw them succumb to a 2-1 defeat against Istanbul Basaksehir.
Demba Ba was allowed free run from the halfway line as Istanbul counter-attacked in the first half, with only Nemanja Matic in pursuit, and the veteran striker calmly beat Dean Henderson to give Istanbul the lead.
United’s defending for the second goal was also shambolic, as Istanbul broke forwards again in numbers, and Edin Visca was able to power home a first-time strike while under little pressure.
“The goals against us....please tell me someone is going nuts in that changing room and people are being made accountable," Ferdinand wrote on Instagram. "The shape of the team when we lose the ball for the 1st goal.”
Former United midfielder Paul Scholes, working as a pundit for BT Sport, said of the Red Devils' display: "I think there was an element of commitment, I just think the quality was so bad.
"The amount of times they gave the ball away, made bad decisions trying to beat a man... Paul Pogba when he came on, he was trying to beat a man, he was trying to hold people off rather than pass the ball and keep it moving.
"The movement from the centre-forwards was virtually non-existent. Anthony Martial, the amount of times I looked up when a midfielder had the ball, he was just stood in between two centre-halves doing nothing.
"It was just a real lack of quality for me. I'm trying to find an excuse, a reason for it, but at the end of the day I think they were in good positions but the final bit of quality was really, really lacking."
