Jurgen Klopp praised Liverpool debutant Adrian for a series of “unbelievable saves” as the Reds beat Chelsea 5-4 on penalties to win the Uefa Super Cup in Istanbul.

An injury suffered by first-choice goalkeeper Alisson in Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Norwich City handed Adrian his chance to shine, after he moved to the club on a free transfer from West Ham United this summer.

And the Spaniard performed well, making a series of good saves before denying Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham to win Liverpool their fourth Super Cup title.

“What a story. He kept his nerves together,” Klopp said of the 32-year-old.

“He’s loud in the dressing room already. I don’t think he’s won a lot in his life so it’s good for him to win it. He made some unbelievable saves, both keepers did, so I’m really happy for him.”

Klopp added that he was delighted to see his team prevail after the game headed to extra-time in the heat and humidity of Istanbul.

“It was a very difficult game for both teams. It was all about winning it and we did that in the end,” he added.

“Nobody in the stadium wanted extra-time, it was a killer. I’m not sure about the penalty but who cares now.

“We started well then dropped off... we could talk about football but it’s too late now. We had to fight and the boys did tonight.”
