Liverpool fans given just 9,000 tickets to Europa League final despite Jurgen Klopp claim 100,000 will travel

Jurgen Klopp has said as many as 100,000 Liverpool fans could head to the Europa League final after his side cruised through their semi-final against Villarreal. However, the vast majority will be left disappointed if they hope to actually see the match.

That's because Uefa have given Liverpool an allocation of just 9,000 tickets for the final.

Their opponents Sevilla will get the same number for the 35,000 capacity St Jakob-Park in Basel. A further 9,000 have already been sold by Uefa to neutral fans while the remaining 8,000 seats will go to the "local organising committee, national associations, commercial partners and broadcasters, and to serve the corporate hospitality programme".

Uefa are somewhat limited by the relatively small capacity of the stadium in Switzerland, but Liverpool fans will still feel aggrieved that so few of them will be able to see their club's first European final for nine years. It will mean two-thirds of the club's 27,000 season tickets holders will be denied the opportunity to watch their side take on Sevilla.

Speaking after last night's impressive 3-0 win over Villarreal that sent Liverpool to the final 3-1 on aggregate Klopp said the fans should relish contesting a first European final since the 2007 Champions League defeat to AC Milan, not thinking about the Champions League qualification that will come with winning the match.

"The Champions League is not important," he told BT Sport. "We are in a final and we want to win it."

He continued: "We’ll go to Basel and we’ll take 70,000, maybe 100,00, Liverpool fans with us. It is a nice city by the way, close to my home."
