Jerome Boateng won't have enjoyed waking up this morning, almost as much as he won’t have liked falling on his backside as Lionel Messi left him in a spin before scoring his second goal against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

As has become the usual protocol when anything of note happens on the football pitch, social media was quickly awash with tweets and memes of Messi and Boateng. The former Manchester City centre-back, who has been widely praised during his time with Bayern, was left in a daze by the Argentinian who led that charge as Barcelona secured a healthy 3-0 aggregate lead in the Champions League semi-final.

Messi opened the scoring before his brilliant second, and his team-mate Neymar rounded out the scoring to send the Catalans to Munich with one foot already in the Champions League final.

Boateng won’t want to look back on the moment that left him dumbfounded on the turf, but football fans took things one step further as they brutally announced his death on his Wikipedia page.

Other such tweets and memes were just as harsh:

We can confirm that Boateng is not dead, nor is his career over as has been billed by some media agencies, and he’ll have a chance to atone for his error in the second-leg at the Allianz Arena next week. Or, he can find himself in even more of a mess when Messi comes to Munich.
