Jamie Carragher blamed being “hungover” after not realising he was on air while working for Norwegian channel Viasport.

Carragher was slouched over a table pitchside at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Madrid ahead of Saturday night’s Champions League final between Liverpool and Tottenham, and appeared totally unaware as presenter Jan Aage Fjortoft posed him a question.

The former Liverpool captain could be seen on his phone, only to realise what was going on halfway through the segment and ask: “Are we on air?”

Ever the professional, Carragher quickly swept away his phone and water bottle and explained he was “hungover”.

“Were you out last night,” Fjortoft asked, to which Carragher replied with a grin: “No.”
