Louis van Gaal has handed a surprising start to young winger Jesse Lingard ahead of Wednesday night's Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow.

Earlier this week, the Dutchman hinted he may rest some key players due to the short recovery time between this away fixture and the Manchester derby on Sunday.

With Lingard in, Juan Mata drops to the bench. Antonio Valencia comes in for Matteo Darmian in the only other change to the side which put in an impressive performance against Everton last weekend.

Wayne Rooney, who scored at Goodison Park for the first time in eight yers on Saturday, retains his place up front. The often-unfancied Ander Herrera also stays in the side after his man-of-the-match display.

Memphis Depay, struggling to find a consistent vein of form, remains among the substitutes.
