Manchester United claimed a useful point away to CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday night. It could, however, have been a lot worse for Louis van Gaal's side after a dismal first half display.

Despite easing themselves into the game, the visitors momentum was broken by Anthony Martial's needless handball in his own box. Roman Eremenko stepped up for the spot-kick and saw his effort pushed away by David De Gea, but Seydou Doumbia was given practically permission to follow in the rebound when United’s defence reacted sloppily.

During the rest of the first half, United persisted with their slow, square passing and barely threatened a CSKA side more than comfortable to break on the counter.

Changes were needed at half-time and were duly made. Marouane Fellaini's introduction brought greater command of the midfield and United's play became more purposeful as a result.

The equaliser came 65 minutes in when Martial, atoning for his earlier error, met Antonio Valencia's cross with his head and brilliantly steered the ball home.

For the remaining minutes, the visitors looked likeliest to score but could not find a winner. They will nevertheless return to Manchester happy with the result, if not the performance.
