Cristiano Ronaldo suffered what appeared to be a muscle injury during Portugal’s Euro 2020 qualifier with Serbia, leaving the pitch in obvious discomfort during the first half, and the five-time Ballon d’Or winner could now be a doubt for Juventus’s Champions League quarter-final tie against Ajax.

Ronaldo was sprinting after a pass when he pulled up with a grimace, hopped over the sideline and gestured to the Portuguese bench to be substituted. After some brief treatment on the side of the pitch he was replaced by the Benfica midfielder Pizzi.

Portugal were trailing 1-0 to Dusan Tadic’s penalty at the time, but pulled a goal back before half-time scored by Porto’s Danilo Pereira.

It is only a little over two weeks until the first leg of Juve's quarter-final, in Amsterdam on 10 April, before the return fixture the following week in Turin.
