The Blues were drawn in Group E alongside Sevilla, Rennes and Krasnodar.
Europa League winners Sevilla look likeliest to challenge for top spot with Krasnodar providing the trickiest trip of the group stage.
Rennes will see goalkeeper Edouard Mendy reunited with his former team after his summer transfer to Stamford Bridge.
Their first Champions League match at Stamford Bridge against the Europa League holders is sandwiched between a home game against Southampton and a trip to Manchester United in the Premier League, with the trip to Russia to face Krasnodar just four days later.
