Chelsea vs Rennes result: Player ratings as Timo Werner nets two penalties in Champions League win

Chelsea achieved a comfortable 3-0 Champions League win over Rennes at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Tammy Abraham rounded out the scoring for the hosts after Timo Werner had netted twice from the penalty spot, with Rennes’ Dalbert conceding both spot-kicks.

The defender was booked on both occasions, and his resultant first-half sending-off had the visitors up against it in the latter period.

Here’s how each player got on in the Group E meeting:

Chelsea

Edouard Mendy – 7: Up against his former side, the goalkeeper made a couple of difficult catches as well as a strong save late on.

Reece James – 8: Assured at the back. Made one key defensive header from a threatening Rennes corner in the first half and provided a sharp assist for Abraham in the second.

Thiago Silva – 6: Rarely troubled by opponents that he knows well from his many years in France.

Kurt Zouma – 6: Solid for the most part but was booked rather unnecessarily in the first half.

Ben Chilwell – 7: Alert defensively (on the infrequent occasions when he needed to be) and eager to get forward throughout the game.

N’golo Kante – 7: Did a good job of breaking up play as often as he could. A familiar performance from the France midfielder.

Jorginho – 6: Tidy showing in the middle from the Italy international.

Mason Mount – 7: Impressed with a mature performance in every area of the pitch.

Hakim Ziyech – 7: As spritely as he usually is, giving the Rennes defence plenty to think about.

Tammy Abraham – 8: Did well to push through an apparent injury early on and added a real striker’s finish to make it 3-0.

Timo Werner – 9: Lured in Dalbert after a heavy touch to win an early penalty, which he squeezed past Gomis. Hammered home his second from the spot. Worked hard throughout.

Rennes

Alfred Gomis – 6: Got fingertips to Werner’s first penalty, could do nothing about the second or Abraham’s goal.

Hamari Traore – 5: Like his fellow defenders, had his back against the wall for much of the game.

Damien Da Silva – 6: Task was naturally made more difficult after Dalbert’s red card, but the captain did well at times to limit Werner’s contributions.

Naif Aguerd – 6: Made a vital interception in the Rennes box in the second half, just about keeping his side in the game at that point.

Dalbert – 4: Gave away two penalties in the first half and was booked each time. Second penalty decision was maybe harsh – the accompanying booking certainly was.

Steven N’Zonzi – 6: Disciplined showing in the centre of the pitch against a strong Chelsea midfield. Not much to fault in the case of the Frenchman, who could do little about the second-half onslaught.

James Lea Siliki – 5: Showed moments of creativity in the first half but was sacrificed at the break after Dalbert’s sending-off.

Benjamin Bourigeaud – 6: Was somewhat inconsistent with his deliveries, but when he got it right he had the Blues a little on edge.

Yann Gboho – 6: Struggled to find space in the Chelsea defence to make an impact for the visitors, but not for a lack of trying. Was restricted following Dalbert’s dismissal.

Martin Terrier – 5: Failed to make much of an impact, even when his side had all 11 men on the pitch.

Sehrou Guirassy – 5: Similarly muted up top for the visitors.
