Brendan Rodgers's Celtic suffered the worst defeat in the club's Champions League history at the hands of Barcelona in the Nou Camp on Tuesday, but surprisingly this was not the worst defeat in Europe's most prestigious tournament.

The Scottish side conceded seven with no reply as Lionel Messi and Co took the Glaswegians apart in their opening Champions League Group C match.

However, the likes of Sevilla, B 1913 Odense, Derry City, Omonia Nikosia, FC Reipas Lahti, FC Wacker Innsbruck and Malmo FF have all suffered worse defeats in Europe's elite competition.

Real Madrid 8 v 0 Sevilla

1957/58

Real Madrid beat their fellow Spanish side Sevilla by eight goals on their way to another European trophy in a period of dominance across Europe for Madrid. Miguel Muñoz's side boasted one of the best players ever to grace the game in Alfredo Di Stefano, who scored four in the match played at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid 9 v 0 B 1913 Odense

1961/62

B 1913 Odense took a nine-goal battering at the hands of the eventual finalists, Real Madrid. The team managed at the time by Miguel Muñoz where one of the great teams of all time having monopolised European football from 1955. Di Stefano scored three of the nine goals for Madrid against the side from Denmark.

RSC Anderlecht 9 v 0 Derry City

1965/66

Derry City who were formed in Derry, Ireland in 1928 suffered another 9-0 thrashing at the hands of Belgium side RSC Anderlecht. Anderlecht would go on to the quarter-finals where they were knocked out by eventual winners, Real Madrid.

FC Reipas Lahti 1 - 9 Spartak TAZ Trnava

1968/69

Spartak TAZ Trnava from Slovakia handed Finnish side, FC Reipas Lahti, a 9-1 defeat in the Last 16 of the European Cup in front of 6,000 home fans.

Bayern Munich 9 - 0 Omonia Nicosia

1972/73

Omonia Nicosia are a Cypriot team who play in the Cypriot first division. Formed in 1948, Omonia found themselves facing German Giants Bayern Munich in the Last 16 of the 197/73 European Cup. The team from Cyprus crashed out of the competition at the hands Bayern, who scored nine goals, five of them coming through their star striker Gerd Muller.

AFC Ajax 10 v 0 Omonia Nicosia

1979/80

Unfortunately for Omonia, they were on the receiving end of an even worse defeat to Amsterdam's Ajax in 1979, they lost the match 10-0 with Soren Lerby scoring five of the goals. Ajax would go on to the semi-finals where they lost 2-1 on aggregate to Nottingham Forrest, who went on to a claim a famous victory over Hamburg in the final.

Real Madrid 9 v 1 FC Wacker Innsbruck

1990/91

John Toshack's Madrid beat Austrian side 9-1 in the round of 16 at the Santiago Bernabeu. On the night, Hugo Sanchez scored four of Madrid's nine goals. Madrid progressed only to the quarter-finals where they lost 3-1 on aggregate to Spartak Moscow.

Liverpool 8 v 0 Besiktas

2007/08

Rafa Benítez's Liverpool destroyed Turkish side Besiktas in front of 41,143 fans at Anfield. Yossi Benayoun scored a hat-trick to keep Liverpool's European campaign alive. They would go on to reach the semi-finals where they lost to Chelsea 4-3 on aggregate.

Real Madrid 8 v 0 Malmo FF

2015/2016

Fifty-eight years on from when Di Stefano stunned Sevilla with four goals in an 8-0 crushing defeat, Real Madrid's modern day superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, scored four in another 8-0 victory. This win came over the Sweedish side, Malmo, in the Champions League Group A, as Real Madrid were on their way to winning their 11th European Cup.
